Aina Alegre celebrate the legacy of Carmen Amaya, who revolutionised flamenco in the 1930s

By In Dance 1 hour

freely interprets the dance and energy of bailaora Carmen Amaya. This artist had a varied career, from Barcelona’s gypsy quarter to Hollywood, from the World’s Fair to the White House, from the flamenco tradition to Ravel’s Bolero. This ghost permeates the bodies, sound and light of Aina Alegre’s new piece. Seizing on this heritage that they revisit, the dancers enter the ball, propelling themselves through the electrified space and summoning the energy of this figure through their own dazzling dance!

A choreographer and dancer, Aina Alegre has been creating performances and stage works in a variety of formats since 2010. She approaches choreography as a means of opening up imaginary worlds through the body. Her work explores different relationships with the collective body, and she conceives her choreographic process as an “orchestration” of movement, sound, light and space. Her writing is both choreographic and musical; in recent years, she has developed a distinctive musical style, choreographing and composing music for the eyes. Through her creations, she also investigates the notions of memory and archive – themes that run throughout her work.
