Hans van Manen (1932–2025) was a world-renowned Dutch choreographer, dancer, and photographer, widely celebrated as a grand master of contemporary ballet. He passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 93.
Early Career and Major Affiliations
- Training: He began his dance studies in the late 1940s under Sonia Gaskell and later danced with the Netherlands Opera Ballet and Roland Petit‘s company in Paris.
- Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT): A pivotal figure at NDT, he served as a dancer and choreographer before becoming its Artistic Director from 1961 to 1971.
- Dutch National Ballet: He spent decades as a resident choreographer, beginning in 1973 and returning in 2003, creating over 150 works throughout his career.
