Noverre: Young Choreographers 2023 is a platform dedicated to emerging creative voices within the Stuttgart Ballet, offering dancers and guest artists the opportunity to develop and present original choreographic works on the stage of the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart. Named after the influential reformer Jean-Georges Noverre, the programme continues his legacy of ballet as an expressive, dramatic, and evolving art form.
The 2023 edition featured seven short works created in close collaboration with Stuttgart Ballet dancers, combining classical training with contemporary experimentation. The programme included Veritas vos liberat by Emanuele Babici, #fivewithfive – Just a Few Moons Away by Anne Jung, Sweet spot by Lucyna Zwolińska, Je ne regrette rien by Adrian Oldenburger, Abụọ by Nnamdi Nwagwu, Earth Spell by Maya Popova, and 2 m² of skin by Martino Semenzato.
Music played a central dramaturgical role throughout the evening, ranging from reinterpreted classical works to contemporary electronic compositions and vocal references, including nods to French chanson in Je ne regrette rien. Each choreographer selected or developed soundscapes that shaped the emotional architecture of their piece, reinforcing rhythm, tension, and narrative intent.
The scenographic approach remained intentionally minimal, focusing on the interaction between body, space, and light. The stage of the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart became a flexible environment where lighting design and spatial composition replaced traditional set structures. This allowed each work to establish a distinct visual identity while maintaining a unified aesthetic framework.
Costumes were provided through the Stuttgart Ballet costume atelier, supporting a balance between functionality and artistic individuality. The dancers of the company were essential collaborators in the creative process, contributing not only as performers but also as interpreters and co-creators of movement material.
