汉斯·范·曼恩

Hans van Manen (1932–2025) was a world-renowned Dutch choreographer, dancer, and photographer, widely celebrated as a grand master of contemporary ballet. He passed away on December 17, 2025, at the age of 93. 

Early Career and Major Affiliations

• Training: He began his dance studies in the late 1940s under Sonia Gaskell and later danced with the Netherlands Opera Ballet and Roland Petit‘s company in Paris.
• Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT): A pivotal figure at NDT, he served as a dancer and choreographer before becoming its Artistic Director from 1961 to 1971.
• Dutch National Ballet: He spent decades as a resident choreographer, beginning in 1973 and returning in 2003, creating over 150 works throughout his career. 

Artistic Style

Known as the “Mondrian of dance,” van Manen’s work is defined by: 

• Precision and Clarity: A “less is more” approach featuring clean lines and refined simplicity.
• Human Relationships: His ballets avoided narrative storytelling, focusing instead on the emotional and erotic dynamics between partners.
• Innovations: He pioneered the fusion of classical ballet with modern techniques and was a precursor in using live video on stage (notably in Live, 1979).
