A collection of three works created for Ballet BC by exciting Canadian choreographers, as well as one of Artistic Director Medhi Walerski‘s most celebrated creations. We are bringing you the North American live premiere of Walerski’s GARDEN along with world premieres from Toronto’s Ethan Colangelo, and Vancouver’s own Lesley Telford and Company 605, exploring human nature and connection.
Stadium
Choreography Ethan Colangelo
Toronto-born Ethan Colangelo recently burst onto the choreographic scene, creating work for Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur, Springboard Danse Montreal, and Arts Umbrella, among others. His newest piece, Stadium, deals with a dialogue and introspective dive into human reflection through memory. As the stadium is built, each character sees themselves as a spectator from outside their own experiences and memories. A highly anticipated work from a Canadian rising star.
After We Glow
Choreography Company 605
In After We Glow, Vancouver’s Company 605 asks how we envision future in our bodies and how we might move there. Time and place are constantly bent and distorted, and dancers move between unfamiliar forms and rhythms, playing within unknowable spaces. Sparking new possibilities for connection, their two separate trajectories align, intersect, merge, and split, eventually weaving together to illuminate a new way forward.
Lean-to
Choreography Lesley Telford
Vancouver choreographer Lesley Telford creates a compelling new piece for Ballet BC, her third commission for the company. Telford’s work has been described as “grounded in something deep, intricate, meaningful” (Georgia Straight), taking audiences on a lush, nuanced journey through human connection. This work explores the interdependencies of family constellations and how they transform over time.
Lean-to will be accompanied in part by live music from artists of Early Music Vancouver, including Chloe Meyers and Jiten Beairsto (violin), Natalie Mackie (viola da gamba), Krisztina Szabo (mezzo-soprano), and Alexander Wiemann (harpsichord).
Garden
Choreography Medhi Walerski
Mr. Walerski is a choreographer who makes clear, theatrical choices and seems deeply invested in conceptual coherence.
Globe and Mail
Previously nominated by Dance Europe for Best Production, GARDEN is an elegant and sophisticated work inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 14. Through a series of duets, unison, and counterpoint, while reflecting the refined dialogue between strings and piano, the dancers shape the space physically in a pure and organic way.
