Torus is a hypnotic contemporary dance work by Humanhood that brings together physics, Eastern mysticism, rhythm, and the collective energy of the human body. Inspired by the torus – a three-dimensional form found throughout nature, from the shape of an apple to the Earth’s magnetic field – the work explores the idea of an energetic field in constant motion.
The performance begins far out in the cosmos before gradually drawing inward toward the Earth, where individual bodies become part of a shared rhythm. Five dancers move as if forming a single living organism, constantly transforming, synchronising, separating, and reconnecting. The choreography shifts between explosive physical energy and moments of energetic implosion, creating the sensation of a system that is continuously evolving.
Rhythm is at the heart of Torus. Movement, sound, and light interact to alter the audience’s perception of time, turning rhythm into something simultaneously visual, sonic, and kinaesthetic. Humanhood‘s distinctive fluid movement language creates intricate patterns in which individual bodies merge into larger energetic structures.
The work grew from Humanhood’s long-term research into physics and astrophysics, combined with the company’s exploration of Eastern movement practices and spirituality. During its development, Julia Robert and Rudi Cole collaborated with the Taiwanese Ten Drum Art Percussion Group, recording traditional gongs and drums in Tainan. These sounds were fused with electronic music by EIF to create an immersive original score.
With its combination of precise physical patterns, tribal rhythms, light, and sound, Torus becomes a journey from the cosmic to the human – an exploration of connection, transformation, and the invisible forces that bind individual bodies into a collective whole.
